Here are some answers to those questions in the back of your mind...
Q: Are you guys going to be the next Jon and Kate Plus 8?
A: Absolutely not! Our clinic takes extensive measures to ensure something like that does not happen. In my age group, the rate of twins is only 20%. There have been ZERO cases of multiples higher than twins.
Q: Does IVF guarantee you a baby?
A: Unfortunately, no. The pregnancy success rate for my age group is 51%. While this may seem low, you have to remember that a normal, healthy couple only has a 20-25% chance of becoming pregnant on any given cycle. IVF greatly increases the odds.
Q: When will you know if it worked?
A: Two weeks from Egg Retrieval.
Q: How long will this take?
A: The protocol we are on will take approximately two months. These are my best guesses of dates:
Sept 9 - Start BCP
Sept 29 - Start Lupron
Oct 13 - Start Stims
Oct 26 - Egg Retrieval
Oct 31 - Transfer
Nov 9 - Beta test for pregnancy
Again those are my best guesses. I can give better dates when we receive our calendar. I have a test next Monday that will greatly determine our schedule. They are repeating the dye test (HSG) on my tubes. Please pray that is test is conclusive and there is no hydrosalpinx.
Q: What in the world is a hydrosalpinx?!
A: A hydrosalpinx means that the fallopian tube is filled with fluid and is blown up like a balloon. This is obviously bad for fertility. The last time they did the dye test they didn't get a clear picture of the right tube, so we need to check it again. A hydrosalpinx reduces the success of IVF by 60%. They can do surgery to remove it and then you can proceed with IVF.
Q: Is there anything I can do?
A: Yes! Please keep us in your prayers. You can pray for Dr. B and his staff. Also pray for Nurse Debbie. She is our IVF nurse along with everyone else's IVF nurse. I would imagine she has a hectic job dealing with a bunch of hormonal women! As I said in the beginning, I will keep you posted on other specific things you can pray for as they come!
